Nicely presented. A Ruger Single Six 22 fills that role for me, though I inherited Dad's old Colt Woodsman and it too is a fine piece to carry. Each is quite accurate enough for the task and so easy to shoot well. Thanks for the article!
My S&W M34 4in. is the definition of a kit gun. It rates 9.0/10 only because of its nickel finish. It is as capable of grouping at 25 yd. as my M17. That's saying a lot!
Its the go-to backup handgun; in my handmade pancake holster, paired up with a load out of HP ammo in a HKS speedloader and/or speed strips and I'm ready for a day in the woods adventure!
A S&W Model 63 is hard to beat as the perfect kit gun. 8 rds in the cylinder, and fits the hand perfectly. Mine had a 6" barrel and was very accurate. I still regret selling it to a friend.

The 3 1/2" Heritage and Ruger Wrangler are probably the top kit guns anymore.
My favorite “kit gun” was a H&R 22 combo I personally prefer the 22 mag over the 22 lr . Sadly it and 60+ others were stolen
